School Closure Procedure

In difficult weather conditions,
we aim to keep our schools open, as possible, while considering all safety and educational factors. We thank you for your prayers and support!

Vijay Manuel, Head of MEI Schools (@headofschools)

School Closure Decision Making Processes Include
Assessment of:
– sidewalks & stairways
– parking lots
– water levels of the creek
– bus routes
– general driving conditions (our staff check local roads)
– current weather conditions
– projections for future weather conditions

Consultation with:
– neighbouring independent schools
– neighbouring public districts
– our principals
– the Abbotsford Police Department as necessary

Prayer!!

Some of the factors that make MEI unique
– We’re not a neighbourhood school and almost exclusively a commuter school
– Students travel from Chilliwack, Mission, Yarrow, Langley, and all parts of Abbotsford
– Staff travel from Chilliwack, Mission, Langley, and all parts of Abbotsford

Other factors all schools must consider
– Are we able to provide a quality learning experience if we have 1/3 or 1/2 of our students in the building?
– If some teachers aren’t able to make it to school, do we have the support from our Teacher On Call pool to handle the sudden demand?
– Can we confidently say that we made the best decision to open if an injury or fatality occurs?
