The Movement of Jesus Christ

A movement can be defined as something that moves, inspires, and compells followers to share a message with others.  A movement makes big change achievable as it impacts soceity as a whole.  While the primary goal isn't to change behaviour, it inspires passion and action (ElizabethKanna.com).

Have you ever felt compelled to do something because of the passion you feel burning inside of you?

I grew up witnessing the movement of Jesus Christ all around me.  This movement was filled with names that you won't likely know, but their humble dependance on Jesus Christ and their authentic love for Him was what helped to make me who I am today.  Thanks to Mr. & Mrs. Dycke, Orlando, the Jesses, Ravi, Mr. Veer, the Sawatzkys, and the Epps.  Each of these folks shared a similar message even though they never met.  How they shared their message was just as important as the message itself; they were all humble followers of Christ.

What Jesus started some 2000 years ago was filled with people who had been moved, inspired, and compelled to share... Jesus started a movement.

Have we reduced this powerful movement into something that is an organization, business, or system?

It's almost as if we need to unite around one common message or PERSON, or idea that we ALL believe in passionately because it has CHANGED US and we all, each one of us, know with every fibre of our bodies that without that one thing we’d be lost… completely useless like a branch that dries up is not good for anything (John 15)… something that truly unites us beyond being more right than the other group, more good than the other group, more smart, wise, talented, having more money… 

The people outside our church buildings don’t really care what we debate about and it’s making less and less of a difference in their lives.

Since 1971, the numbers of Canadians who identify as protestant Christians has dropped from 41% to 27%.  Those who identify as having no religios affiliation have risen from 4% to 24%.  In a separate survey conducted in 2015, only 15% of Canadians indicated that they attend church once each month... once.

Paul was a brilliant man who was well educated and passionate about religion.  When Paul met Jesus everything changed.  Here is part of Paul's response to an encouter with the movement that is Jesus:

But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ and be found in him,~ Philippians 3:7-11

When is the last time you were moved by the Holy Spirit towards repentance and change; towards an on-your-knees response?

Once in your lifetime? Once per decade? Per year? Per week? Daily?

All of our statements of faith will say that we believe in the Holy Trinity, but do we leave any space for the Holy Spirit to speak, to move, to guide, and to convict when we worship?

Do our children see us completely dependent on the Holy Spirit at home? Is there space & room for Him to speak, to move, to guide, and to convict?
