I’ve heard the argument made that ‘MEI is full of Christian kids’. I likely said it myself when I was a public school educator! It is in fact true that 3/4 of our children indicate that they come from church-attending families. That number seems to be growing as we have increased from 75% to 93% Christian families (church attending) at the Kindergarten level over the past 3 years. To be clear, everyone is welcome at MEI (we are an open-enrollment school) and an Eagle is an Eagle! Is the statistic indicating church attendance, however, synonymous with ‘Christian kids’?
In order to be saved from the consequences of sin, we each must come to a place of understanding our desperate need for God and accept forgiveness and fulfillment through the person of Jesus Christ. In more practical terms, an elementary teacher who has my daughter in her class is part of the team that will help Zoe make a decision to follow Jesus.
None of us can assume that a child is walking with Jesus because of the family they come from. Equally importantly, none of us can assume that a child isn’t walking with Jesus because of their last name, the colour of their skin, or the family they come from. In actuality, if one declares with their mouth that Jesus is Lord and believes in their heart that God raised Him from the dead, that person will be saved (Romans 10:9-11). Praise the Lord!
A significant part of the call on the MEI team, then, is to lead each of the children in our care to making a personal decision to follow Jesus. We are uniquely positioned to share the Gospel of Christ in a way that perhaps almost no one else can because we see our students from 8am to 3pm, 5 days per week, and for 40 weeks per year; that’s about 1400 hours per year. Now add on the extra-curricular time for many students and you’re at an even higher number! We also have complete freedom to speak the Truth of God into the hearts and minds of our students during these 1400 hours with the prayer that each of them will believe and proclaim that Jesus is Lord.
Perhaps our school is more of a mission field than anything else!? This is what I believe and this is what I am most excited to be a part of with the amazing team at MEI.
I pray for the strength, courage, and discipline to live a life that is worthy of this incredible calling and invite you to join us! Let’s together watch for and take advantage of every opportunity to lead our children to Jesus: parties, sleep-overs, meal times, car rides...
May God bless you!
I'm so grateful that you are leading this school with this heart and conviction...to see the students coming to a Christ and providing an environment for Jesus to be lifted high!!!! PRAISE GOD!!!!
