Dear MEI Families,
MEI Schools has received a total of 19 Early Notification Letters in the first 7 months of the school year: 4 in the elementary school, 6 in the middle school, and 9 in the secondary school. The most recent letter received was on March 6, 2021.
I want to thank you for doing your part to keep MEI safe. You are doing a GREAT job and I couldn’t be more thankful for each of you.
The Latest Changes
To Be Implemented at MEI on Thursday, April 1st
The latest changes being mandated by our provincial government are currently scheduled to last until April 19th. If you have questions or concerns in regards to the government’s decision, the most effective avenue of response will be to reach out to your local Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) as they can speak directly to the government that is working closely with the Provincial Health Officer to make these decisions.
As always, our principals will be very happy to discuss any of your ideas, thoughts, and concerns as well.

The New Mandate

Masks should be worn indoors for all K - 12 staff and for all students in grades 4 - 12, including on busses. There are some exceptions which include when one is behind a barrier, eating or drinking, temporarily removing their mask for an educational purpose such as playing an instrument, and where visual cues and facial expressions are necessary. The government has also encouraged children in K - 3 to wear masks when indoors.

No Judgement
B.C.’s schools have been directed to offer a complete education to any of our students who may not wear a mask. It is critically important that we do our part and not judge, disrespect, or demean others who may see things differently than we do regardless of our own positioning.
Additional Outdoor Time
It is extremely clear in the latest round of changes that the government has not mandated masks for the outdoors. I have asked our principals to encourage and support outdoor learning time to allow for a removal of masks, intake of fresh outdoor air, and an opportunity to look at each other’s smiling faces.

I am convinced that there isn’t a better school environment to weather a storm like the one we’re facing today. When a literal storm bombarded the boat that Jesus and His disciples were in, they ran to wake Jesus up in a panic, yet He was calm and fully in control. Jesus simply told the wind and the waves to be quiet, and they were. He asked his disciples: “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” (Mark 4:40). Today, let us fully trust the One who even controls the wind and the waves.
